Coin Word Problems (2 variable – addition)
A man has two more nickels than dimes, and has $1.15 in total. How many coins of each
kind does he have?
Let N = Nickels, Let D = Dimes 5N+10D = 115 you can use decimal form or "cents" form which may be easier N = D + 2 substituting... 5(D+2)+10D = 115 5D+10+10D = 115 15D = 105 D = 7 Therefore, Dimes = 7 and Nickels = 9
Let’s check by plugging the numbers into the original formula:5*9 + 10*7=45+70=105
